Madrid tube train blast injures several passengers after lithium ion batteries explode sparking panic on underground

Passengers thought the exploding device was a bomb but terrorism has been ruled out

SEVERAL people have been injured following a blast on a Madrid tube train this morning.

The incident occurred when a commuter’s computer tablet exploded and terrorism has been ruled out.

The blast occurred on a Line 9 train travelling towards Paco de Lucia at Principe de Vergara tube station in the Spanish capital.

At least six people have reportedly been hurt including the owner of the tablet and travellers sitting nearby.

The device is believed to belong to a woman who had it in her bag.

Local reports said the blast caused scenes of panic among commuters who mistook it for a terror attack.

Police and paramedics have been sent to the scene.

Large amounts of smoke was seen coming out of the carriage after the explosion.

Commuter Juan Teixera tweeted: “A tube was evacuated because a tablet exploded. Half an hour trapped inside.”

Gonzalo Casatejada, 33, told El Pais: "People started running, they said there was a backpack with smoke.

"We opened the door manually, we had been standing for several minutes, but people got scared and everybody started to run.

"We were afraid that it would be an attack."

Passengers activated the emergency brake before leaving the train and walking along the track.

The train though was said to have stopped just 100 meters away from the platform.

Underground services between Sainz de Baranda and Avenida de America had been suspended but have now been reopened.

Ambulances and members of the national and local police are at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Emergencies Madrid said staff were helping 17 passengers deal with shock.

A similar incident happened in July when passengers on a Ryanair jet to Ibiza were panicked after a mobile phone battery caught fire as the plane was about to take off.

Holidaymakers were led off the plane at Barcelona's El Prat airport after the inflatable slide was activated.
